A lot of backyards just don't work the way they should. The space is there, but it's either unusable, hard to maintain, or it just doesn't fit the way the family actually lives. That's exactly the kind of problem we love solving.

Here's what we were working with - a backyard that had real potential but needed some structure to make it functional. We poured a large concrete slab that runs the full length of the back of the house, giving the homeowners a clean, open surface they can actually use. No more dealing with patchy grass or muddy ground right outside the back door.

The block retaining wall is one of our favorite parts of this job. It runs along the side of the patio area and creates a defined border between the hardscape and the planting beds behind it. The dark river rock fill behind the wall ties the whole thing together and keeps maintenance low. No mowing, no weeding, no fuss. The wall itself does real work too - holding back the grade and keeping everything in its place year after year.

We think about these projects holistically. A big slab with no borders just looks unfinished. Pairing the concrete with a well-built block wall and clean landscaping details is what takes a backyard from basic to something the whole family actually wants to spend time in. Plenty of room under the pergola for evenings outside, and the kids still have a full grass yard to run around in.

That's what good hardscaping does. It doesn't take over your yard - it organizes it. Concrete that's built right and a retaining wall that's properly installed will hold up for decades without giving you headaches.
