Stamped Concrete Patio and Chilton Retaining Wall Backyard Build

A lot of backyards just sit there unused. No real gathering spot, no defined space - just grass and a back door. This family wanted something their kids could play on and that worked for grilling and hanging out with friends. That's exactly what we built.

We poured a stamped, colored concrete pad with a flagstone texture pattern across the whole surface. It's got the look of natural stone without the uneven footing or long-term maintenance headaches that come with it. The radius step off the back door was built into the design so the transition from the house to the patio feels intentional, not tacked on.

The Chilton retaining walls are what really give this space its structure. They frame the planting beds on either side of the pad and create a clean, raised border that separates the patio from the yard. Chilton is a natural limestone product with a lot of character to it - no two blocks are identical, which gives the finished wall a look that's hard to fake with manufactured products.

Everything was tied together with a fence line running behind the wall on one side. When you're working with a relatively compact backyard, the details matter. The walls, the step, the border - they all need to work together or the whole thing looks disconnected. We planned it that way from the start.

This is the kind of outdoor space that actually gets used. Room for a dining set, room for a grill, room for the kids. Built right, it'll hold up for decades without needing much attention.
